In the next five years, AI may eliminate nearly 8 million jobs in the United Kingdom

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has predicted that nearly eight million jobs in the United Kingdom could be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) over the next five years. This report suggests that women, young workers, and part-time employees would be most affected by automation. Tech mogul Elon Musk, known for his advancements in AI technology, has warned of the disruptive force that AI poses. He believes that AI could render many jobs obsolete, leaving people with a need for personal satisfaction in employment.

The IPPR study analyzed 22,000 different jobs across various sectors and found that up to 7.9 million jobs could be displaced by the second wave of AI within the next three to five years. The first wave of AI impacted only 11% of jobs in the UK. While some experts predict that widespread job displacement could lead to improvements in productivity for companies, it may also hinder GDP growth. However, a best-case scenario involving AI empowering the workforce without significant job losses could lead to a boost in GDP.

The IPPR report calls on the UK government to implement an industrial strategy for AI that focuses on job creation. It suggests offering incentives such as tax breaks, regulatory changes, and job training subsidies to encourage businesses to invest in new technologies while also creating new job opportunities for their employees. While some argue that more decisive action is needed to address the challenges posed by new technology, others believe that this approach will help ensure a smooth transition into a future where technology continues to evolve and improve our lives.
