Amazon is discontinuing the use of ‘Just Walk Out’ technology in grocery stores

Amazon is making changes to its self-service technology at Amazon Fresh stores in the United States. The company is eliminating the “Just Walk Out” technology that allowed customers to pick up items in the store and leave without waiting in a checkout line. Instead of “Just Walk Out,” Amazon will introduce the “Amazon Dash Cart” at these stores. This new technology allows shoppers to grab an item, scan it, and place it in the cart. Customers can then skip the checkout line as payments are made automatically.

The move comes after customers had requested features like easily finding products and deals, viewing their receipts while shopping, and understanding how much money they saved. Amazon Dash Cart aims to provide all these benefits, including skipping the checkout line.

Despite this change, Amazon is keeping the “Just Walk Out” technology at Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K. The company opened its first cashier-less physical grocery store outside the U.S. in London in 2021.

An Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin mentioned that the company has spent time redesigning Amazon Fresh stores to offer a better shopping experience for customers. She said that “We’re constantly looking for ways to make our customers’ lives easier.” With this new change, shoppers can expect a more seamless and convenient shopping experience at Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S
