Astros fans should anticipate shorter wait times and potential challenges with new ticketing technology

The Houston Astros have completed spring training and are now preparing for the 2024 season, which begins on Opening Day against the Yankees. With high demand for tickets, fans can expect large crowds at the first series of the season. However, a new program may offer a way around the long lines.

In Philadelphia last year, a pilot program was launched to test out using facial recognition software to connect a fan’s face with their purchased tickets. The program was successful enough to expand its use to Astros’ home games in 2024. This new system is voluntary and allows fans who opt-in using the MLB Ballpark App to go through the “Go-Ahead Entry” line where scanners will recognize their face and allow entry if they have purchased tickets to the game.

This technology offers a convenient alternative to waiting in line for attendants to scan QR codes and track each person in a party. However, there are potential issues with facial recognition technology that need to be considered. It is not foolproof, and Houston’s preparedness for any technological glitches will determine the success of the new system. If they have resources to handle any potential hiccups and can pivot to traditional ticketing options if needed, it will likely run smoothly. On the other hand, if there are frequent glitches or unpreparedness from the team, it could become more of a nuisance than a convenience.

The use of facial recognition technology has been increasingly popular in sports stadiums across North America as a way to streamline ticketing processes and enhance security measures. While this technology may offer some benefits, it is important for teams like the Astros to be prepared for any potential issues that may arise when implementing such systems.

As we wait for opening day, fans can look forward to seeing their favorite players take the field once again while enjoying all that Astros stadium has to offer. With this new program in place, attending an Astros game has never been more convenient!
