Response to Recent Shootings at Ginnie Springs by Environmental Advocates and Business Owners

On Memorial Day weekend, Gilchrist County residents were disrupted in their celebrations due to multiple shootings at Ginnie Springs, leading to the park’s temporary closure. The sheriff’s deputies confirmed incidents of shootings on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Merrillee Jipson, an environmentalist and owner of a recreational tourism business, expressed concerns about the impact of increased holiday tourism on the springs. She not only highlighted the violence but also the environmental damage caused by visitors who did not respect the natural beauty of the area. Her husband, Doug Jipson, emphasized the importance of educating visitors on proper river etiquette to prevent further destruction of vegetation along the river.

Despite the challenges, they acknowledge that tourism brings economic benefits to the community. They called for collaboration among various springs tourism groups, including the Florida Springs Institute, to address issues and find sustainable solutions for preserving the community and its natural resources. The Jipsons also announced a post-Memorial Day River cleanup event scheduled for June 15 to address some of the damage caused over the holiday weekend.

The community is working towards finding a balance between welcoming tourists and protecting the environment for future generations to enjoy.
