Mitsubishi Corporation’s Kamsarmax bulk carrier, Pyxis Ocean, was the first vessel to be retrofitted with WindWings wind sails. These sails, developed by Bar Technologies and partner Yara Marine Technologies, stand 37.5m tall and were installed on the 80,962dwt vessel at the Cosco yard in China. However, they partially restrict visibility so the Groke Pro situational awareness system from Groke Technologies in Finland was also installed and approved by DNV.

After several successful voyages monitored by Groke, the UK wind sail developer and Finnish technology company plan to work together on additional autonomous navigation systems to improve safety at sea and port operations for ships using WindWings. The Groke Pro system provides images to bridge personnel from various locations on the vessel, using sensor fusion technology to continuously track the ship’s surroundings and combine data from sensors, radar, AIS, and cameras for real-time risk analysis and decision support.

The partnership between Bar Technologies CEO John Cooper and Groke Technologies CEO Juha Rokka is a crucial step towards integrating low carbon propulsion and the latest automation technologies in the maritime industry. They emphasize the importance of innovation and collaboration with industry specialists to overcome operational challenges. According to John Cooper: “We see this partnership as an opportunity to bring together cutting-edge technologies that can make our oceans safer and more sustainable.” Juha Rokka adds: “At Groke Technologies we are dedicated to leading the way in the evolving shipping industry by supporting higher safety standards and a cleaner future through our technology and expertise.”
