China Nearing Completion of Australia Wine Tariff Removal, Says Business Leader

The Australian government is hopeful that the Chinese government will lift heavy tariffs on Australian wine imports, according to a business lobby. The Australia China Business Council recently met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss foreign investment and emphasize that China is “opening up” to business opportunities. However, the National President of the lobby group, David Olsson, has cautioned against high expectations of all producers returning to the market once sanctions are lifted.

Olsson spoke with Bloomberg during the Boao Forum in China and highlighted concerns from Australian businesses about predictability and certainty for long-term investments in the Chinese market. He acknowledged that while Australian business leaders understand the significance of the China market, they are not expecting a return to the pre-tariff era due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Trade relations between Australia and China have improved since the election of center-left Labor government in May 2022. Beijing has gradually lifted trade sanctions imposed on Australian exports during tensions, including restrictions on barley, timber, and coal. However, tariffs as high as 218% remain on Australian wine imports.

The Australian government is optimistic that wine tariffs will be removed by the end of March, but Olsson noted that not all of it is expected to return to the Chinese market. Some producers are already exploring alternative markets. Despite this positive development, Olsson urged caution and emphasized that predictability and certainty were crucial for long-term investments in the Chinese market.
