The Public Health Department Commemorates World Tuberculosis Day 2024

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has recognized World TB Day, an annual event held on March 24th, to raise awareness about the ongoing impact of tuberculosis (TB) on millions of people worldwide. This year’s theme is “Yes! We Can End TB,” emphasizing the need for collective action to eliminate this air-borne infectious disease.

TB is a preventable and treatable condition that affects millions of people each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends individuals to undergo a blood test to determine if they have latent TB infection (LTBI). Most cases of TB result from the progression of LTBI to active TB, which is when the bacteria multiply and develop into active TB. Treatment is available for both LTBI and active TB.

Dr. Henning Ansorg, Public Health Officer and County’s TB Controller, emphasizes that prevention strategies for TB involve treating infection before it becomes active and encouraging community members to openly discuss their symptoms with their healthcare providers. By getting tested for LTBI, individuals can take steps towards preventing active TB from developing.

In 2022, Santa Barbara County recorded higher incidence rates of TB compared to the national average in the United States (4.3 cases per 100,000 vs 2.5 cases per 100,000). However, the County remains committed to working collaboratively with local clinics, hospitals, and organizations to increase awareness about TB risk factors, testing options, and treatment plans as crucial steps in identifying those at risk and preventing active disease.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department encourages everyone in the medical and general community to join its efforts in ending tuberculosis once and for all by educating themselves about this preventable disease and advocating for access to necessary resources such as testing and treatment options
