Surprise: NFL Games Scheduled for Christmas Day in 2024

NFL executive Hans Schroeder made headlines when he announced that the league wouldn’t play on Christmas if it fell on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Many people were skeptical, as it seemed unlikely that the NFL would miss out on such a lucrative opportunity. However, Schroeder clarified that the decision was not final and was subject to change based on viewership data.

As expected, the plan did change, and according to multiple reports, the NFL will be playing on Christmas in 2024, even though it falls on a Wednesday. This decision comes after a nearly 30 percent increase in viewership for the NFL’s Christmas tripleheader from 2022 to 2023, which saw 28.7 million viewers. In contrast, NBA viewership on the same day has been declining.

It is clear that the NFL is not willing to give up its chance to dominate Christmas sports viewership. The league saw an opportunity to expand its presence on the holiday and potentially take over a slot traditionally held by the NBA. This shift in holiday sports programming signals that football is becoming a staple of Christmas entertainment for millions of viewers around the world.
