Byram Hills Higher College student Samantha Milewicz won $60,000 in the 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search Tuesday evening, putting 8th in the oldest science and math competitors for higher college seniors in the nation.
Milewicz won for her project that studied the immune system’s response to a traumatic brain injury. In her analysis, she identified that traumatic brain injuries can bring about the physique to overproduce a protein that holds collectively cells in the blood-brain barrier.
Her project’s title is “Selective Inhibition of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Attenuates Traumatic Brain Injury Mediated Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption in a Novel Dynamic in vitro Model.”
In January, Milewicz was amongst 32 Westchester higher schoolers honored as semifinalists in the competitors, who would every single would acquire $two,000. Milewicz is an unusually achieved higher schooler, even in a county recognized for them.
She became a firefighter when she was 16 and an EMT at 17. At her higher college, she leads four clubs and is the editor-in-chief of the college newspaper. Her photography has been displayed at neighborhood galleries.
The Regeneron competitors sees about 1,900 students submit original scientific analysis every single year and aims to determine the most promising higher college senior scientists. The best ten winners earn among $40,000 and $250,000 to place toward college.
