Egypt to receive 61.5 million euros in new funding from the European Union

The Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation recently signed a financing agreement worth 61.5 million euros with the French Development Agency and the European Union to complete the Yellow Mountain water treatment plant project in Cairo. This project is focused on enhancing climate change adaptation efforts and water projects in Egypt, which make up a significant portion of the development cooperation portfolio with the European Union.

The signing of this financing agreement coincides with World Water Day and is part of the joint Egyptian-European relations under the “Team Europe” initiative. The French Ambassador to Egypt and the Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt both emphasized the importance of cooperation in water security and management for sustainable development and environmental conservation efforts.

The Al-Jabal Al-Asfar water treatment plant project, which serves 17.5 million people by collecting and treating wastewater, is a testament to successful cooperation between Egypt and the European Union in striving for a brighter future and enhancing environmental conservation efforts. This partnership aims to improve services for around 17 million people in Cairo, increase station’s capacity by one million cubic meters per day using advanced technology, tertiary treatment for treated water provision for agricultural irrigation and biogas generation.

The Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, highlighted the importance of water sector in Egypt’s development and its impact on achieving comprehensive development goals through collaborative efforts. The agreement includes a development financing agreement worth 50 million euros, a grant worth 10 million euros between the European Union and French Development Agency will go towards implementing third phase of Al-Jabal Al-Asfar water treatment plant project
