Puerto Rico declares state of emergency due to increase in dengue cases

Dengue infections are on the rise in Puerto Rico, despite typically being seen during the rainy season that starts in the summer months. This year has seen an unexpected increase in cases, with 549 recorded since the start of the year and approximately 62% of those infected requiring hospitalization. Dr. Iris Cardona, the chief medical officer at Puerto Rico’s Department of Health, is concerned that if the numbers continue to rise, the health system on the island could be at risk of being overwhelmed.

To combat the spread of the virus, authorities have conducted multiple spraying operations to reduce the number of mosquitoes in an effort to prevent further infections. However, it is crucial for residents and visitors to take preventive measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites. This includes using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed.

By working together to control the mosquito population and raise awareness about the importance of prevention, the community can help stop the spread of dengue infections on the island. It is essential for everyone to take responsibility for their own health and work towards a safer future for all residents and visitors on Puerto Rico.
