Detroit’s Annual Public Health Week: Empowering Residents with Free Health Screenings and Classes

Free health screenings and classes offered in Detroit for Public Health Week

This week, Detroit is hosting its annual Public Health Week, offering free health screenings to residents. The Detroit Health Department has partnered with the Detroit Police Department, recreation centers, and community members to organize a range of screenings and classes. Last year’s event included vaccinations in addition to the screenings.

This year’s event features a variety of health checks including blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, kidney function checks, HIV and syphilis testing, fitness classes, CPR and Narcan training, mental health makeovers, lead screenings, and a men’s panel discussion called “Cuts and Conversations.”

Senior health and wellness screenings will take place at St. Pat’s Senior Center on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., while Thursday will feature health and wellness screenings at Patton Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by an iDecide Teen Open House at the Detroit Health Department from 5-7:30 p.m. On Friday, the Justice Walk will take place at 2875 W. Grand Blvd from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday Cuts and Conversations will be held at Heilmann Recreation Center and Ford Resource from noon to 2 p.m., as well as Mental Health Makeover and Massages at the same location; Dads and Sons Basketball Challenge will also take place from 2:30-5 p.m..
