5 key players in LA have received a $1.4 billion investment.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced a $140 million, 10-year contract with catcher Will Smith, bringing their spending on key players to nearly $1.4 billion since December. This new deal supersedes an $8.85 million, one-year agreement previously reached in January.

Smith started the week strong by going 5 for 10 with two RBIs during a two-game series in Seoul, South Korea against San Diego. At just 28 years old, he was a first-time All-Star last year and had a standout season with a .261 average, 19 homers, and 76 RBIs. In his six seasons with the Dodgers, Smith has hit .263 with 91 homers and 308 RBIs. With this latest signing, the Dodgers now have a total commitment of $1.365 billion to five key players.

The Dodgers’ spending on key players since December has reached nearly $1.4 billion, including the $700 million they recently signed for two-way star Shohei Ohtani for ten years and right-hander Tyler Glasnow for five years at $136.562 million each. Additionally, they committed $325 million to Yoshinobu Yamamoto for twelve years and outfielder Teoscar Hernandez for one year at $23.5 million respectively.

With this signing of Smith as well as previous signings of Ohtani, Yamamoto, Glasnow and Hernandez, the Dodgers are showing their commitment to building a winning team that can compete at the highest level in Major League Baseball (MLB).
