The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Wednesday that they have signed catcher Will Smith to a 10-year, $140 million contract. This move brings the team’s total spending on key players to nearly $1.4 billion since December. The 28-year-old catcher was named an All-Star for the first time last year after hitting .261 with 19 home runs and 76 RBIs.

Throughout his six seasons with the Dodgers, Smith has maintained a .263 batting average with 91 home runs and 308 RBIs. He would have been eligible for free agency after the 2025 season. Along with signing Will Smith, the Dodgers have also made significant financial commitments to other key players including two-way star Shohei Ohtani ($700 million for 10 years), right-handers Yoshinobu Yamamoto ($325 million for 12 years) and Tyler Glasnow ($136,562,500 for five years), outfielder Teoscar Hernández ($23.5 million for one year) and now Will Smith.

The team’s efforts to secure top talent demonstrate their commitment to building a competitive roster for the future. The signings of both Ohtani and Smith reflect the Dodgers’ focus on acquiring elite talent from around the world, while also maintaining depth in their lineup through the signing of Hernandez and other key players.
