Black Barbershop Health Initiative scheduled for Saturday in Evansville

Recognizing the crucial role that Black barbershops play in the health of Black men, a statewide initiative is taking place this Saturday in Evansville. The annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative aims to provide important health resources to the community through free screenings and education on chronic diseases.

Black barbershops are often seen as a therapy center and a place of healing for Black men, built on a strong relationship based on trust. This makes them an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education to encourage Black men to seek preventative medical care.

Statistics from the Indiana Department of Health show that Black men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana, and prostate cancer is more prevalent among Black men in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group. Addressing these health disparities is at the heart of this initiative, which aims to provide accessible health resources to the community.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at seven participating locations in Evansville, including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being by taking advantage of free screenings and education on chronic diseases.
