The connection between Maduro and evangelicals in Venezuela within the Christian movement

In Venezuela, a religious movement known as the Evangelical Christian Movement for Venezuela (Mocev) has emerged as a key player in Chavismo within the country’s evangelical community. Established in 2017, Mocev boasts around 5 thousand associated pastors and a presence in all 24 states of the country. The movement describes itself as a union of men and women who believe in God, and during election periods it has been an active supporter of the re-election of dictator Nicolás Maduro.

Leading Mocev is Pastor Moisés García, who is also a deputy in the National Assembly for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). The relationship between Mocev and the Maduro regime goes beyond symbolism, with the movement actively participating in religious acts, government events, and actions by the PSUV. During election periods, Mocev offers local evangelical leaders to hold rallies that target support from evangelicals, particularly the poorest members of society.

However, not all Venezuelan evangelicals align with Mocev’s position. The Venezuelan Evangelical Council, established in 1972, emphasizes the importance of separating Church and State. Meanwhile, religious persecution and violence against Christians in Venezuela have been reported by organizations monitoring religious freedom. Despite this opposition, Maduro has intensified his campaigning alongside evangelicals and Mocev during this election cycle. He seeks divine intervention from evangelical pastors to lift international sanctions imposed on Venezuela and has announced new benefits for the evangelical community. These developments have further solidified the alliance between Mocev and the regime.
