Library of Congress Science Historian Shares Insights on Eclipse at WC }}>{Our Campus

In the realm of science and technology, Dr. Josh Levy is a renowned historian whose expertise lies in the Library of Congress’ manuscript division. On Monday, April 8, at 4:30 p.m., he will be gracing Westminster College with his presence for their total solar eclipse watch party at the Dietz Sullivan Lecture Hall in the Hoyt Science Center.

During his presentation, Levy will delve into the historical significance of solar eclipse expeditions and present on “From Pemmican to Palembang: Eclipse Expedition Collections at the Library of Congress.” Through his exploration of manuscripts from three different eclipses – the 1860 eclipse in northern Saskatchewan, the 1889 eclipse in coastal Angola, and the 1926 eclipse in Sumatra – Levy will shed light on how each expedition was intertwined with imperial networks and how they contributed to scientific knowledge through human interactions.

With a Ph.D. in modern U.S. history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Theological Studies degree from Harvard Divinity School under his belt, Levy brings a wealth of knowledge to this enlightening event. This presentation is open to the public and free to attend, providing attendees with an opportunity to learn more about solar eclipses while enjoying light refreshments following the presentation during a reception held by Westminster College’s Department of History in collaboration with their Office of Professional Development and Community Engagement.
