Kin: Microsoft’s answer to the latest iPhone and Android smartphones in 2008

In the early 21st century, when Apple and Google launched iOS operating systems for the iPhone and Android, Microsoft responded with the development of Windows Kin. This product was an attempt by Microsoft to compete with Apple and Google in the smartphone market. However, it failed to gain much attention or success.

Before the launch of Windows Kin, Microsoft had been working on “Microsoft Pink” or “Project Pink,” which was led by James Allard and independent of Andy Lees’ work on Windows Phone. Both teams had different visions for the company’s future in smartphones, leading to internal tension within Bill Gates’ company.

Ultimately, Andy Lees emerged victorious in this internal battle and took charge of the Windows Kin project. The device was officially presented to the public in April 2010 with a focus on social networks and communication. The marketing campaign for this product faced criticism for promoting questionable behaviors, and only around 500 units were sold at launch. As a result, it was withdrawn from the market after a year.

Despite its failure as a product, Windows Kin serves as a reminder of how rapidly the smartphone industry changed during that time period. It also highlights the intense competition between brands like Apple, Google, and Samsung that continues today.
