Sari Essayah: EU’s deforestation regulations stall investments across Europe with messy results

The European Agriculture and Fisheries Council met in Brussels to discuss pressing agricultural issues, including the food market situation and access to the EU market for Ukrainian foodstuffs. Austria initiated a proposal to delay the implementation of the EU deforestation regulation and clarify operational guidelines. The lack of clear instructions has led to uncertainty among member states.

Finland’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sari Essayah, represented the country at the meeting, supporting Austria’s initiative to delay the regulation’s implementation. There were calls from Finland to address the challenges faced by cattle producers due to the decree’s implications. The council emphasized the importance of export earnings for Ukraine while discussing potential solutions together.

The heads of state of EU member states also discussed agricultural issues, calling for innovative solutions to ease administrative burdens on farmers. The European Council highlighted the need for fair income distribution and strengthening farmers’ positions in the food chain. The Commission has already made some regulatory changes but more significant reforms are needed.

The council agreed on extending import freedom of agricultural products from Ukraine for a year with certain emergency measures in place, which was welcomed by both Finland and Ukraine. In conclusion, there is support for Austria’s proposal regarding clearer instructions and more time to implement the deforestation regulation while calls continue for substantial changes to support farmers in the food chain.
