A new study has shed light on the evolution of song lyrics over the past four decades. The research, published in Scientific Reports, reveals that lyrics have become simpler and more repetitive, with a focus on self-centered themes. Researchers analyzed over 12,000 songs in English from various genres from 1990 to 2020, including rap, country, pop, R&B, and rock.
According to lead author Eva Zangerle, there has been a dramatic change in the music landscape over the last 40 years. Factors such as the internet and streaming have influenced this shift towards simpler and more repetitive lyrics. In an era where songs need to engage listeners within the first 10-15 seconds to avoid being skipped, artists are turning to basic lyrics that are easier to memorize.
Across all genres, lyrics were found to be simpler and more repetitive than ever before. There was also a decrease in positive and happy content in songs. Rap music stands out as particularly angry and repetitive compared to other genres. Overall, it seems that music is becoming more focused on self-expression rather than complex themes or messages.
