Top science students from PCHS qualify for state Envirothon competition

PCHS science teacher Nichole Wiechman led the team that won first place in the rookie category at last year’s state Envirothon competition. The team included students Kaylie Simpson, Arleigh Dackermann, Mason Short, and Nichole’s daughters, Madison and Morgan Wiechman. This year, they hope to bring home top honors at the upcoming competition.

To qualify for the state Envirothon competition, the team had to finish among the top four winners at the area competition in April. A second PCHS team also competed, placing ninth but not qualifying for the state competition. Nichole is hopeful that this year’s team will perform as well as or even better than they did last year.

The state Envirothon competition will take place at Hocking College and will feature twenty teams. The competition tests the students’ knowledge and skills in various areas of science, including soil, forestry, aquatics, and wildlife. They will be required to take tests, participate in hands-on competitions, and make oral presentations.

Preparation for the competition is intense, with students undergoing rigorous training, taking practice tests, and engaging in hands-on learning experiences. Despite the demanding nature of the competition, the students are passionate about science and motivated to succeed. Some of them are even planning to pursue careers in related fields, such as ecology, conservation science, environmental science, and sustainability.
