A man who served in the military and recently sought help for his mental health is in critical condition at the hospital after an apparent self-induced drug overdose. Forty-year-old Jean Carlos Aponte, a Purple Heart honoree, reached out to Catch A Lift Fund, a group that provides former service members with mental health support through working out. Army veteran and program founder Chris Haley accepted Aponte into the program.

Haley recalls that Aponte was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and a traumatic brain injury. Despite this, he had a strong desire to make things right for his family, including his wife Sara Ashley Gama, 38, and their two-year-old son Ethan. According to Haley, Aponte wanted to be a positive example for his family and improve his mental health.

On Tuesday, police found Gama and Ethan dead inside their home. The investigation is still active, but no charges have been filed. Police spent Wednesday searching for what neighbors believe was a cellphone in a canal.
