Global Airports Utilize New Technology to Enhance Passenger Experience

Decision-makers at airports in 10 different countries are planning to invest in technology, with a focus on increased use of biometrics. A report released by Amadeus titled Travel Technology Investment Trends shows that 94 percent of airport IT decision-makers are planning to invest in technology in the next year, with 44 percent planning aggressive investments. The study involved 50 senior leaders from airports in 10 countries who were surveyed about their travel technology investment plans and drivers for 2024 and beyond.

The report found that 36 percent of the surveyed airports are focused on adding new technology for improved airport operations, while 33 percent are looking to move passenger processing to the cloud to offer travelers more flexible services. The report also identified the technologies that will have the biggest impact on airport operations over the next 12 months, including digital payment capabilities, data analytics, and biometrics tools.

Holger Mattig, senior vice president of product management for Airport & Airline Operations at Amadeus, noted that the study responses indicate that airports and airlines share common challenges and objectives in improving the passenger experience and managing day-to-day operations with technology. The survey was conducted in December 2023.
