Governor addresses Jim Bridger Carbon Capture Technology proposal

On April 1, PacifiCorp submitted an update to its 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to the Wyoming Public Service Commission. This plan outlines how the state’s largest utility plans to source its energy for the next twenty years. Included in the update is a significant development: the installation of carbon capture technology on coal-fired units 3 and 4 at the Jim Bridger Power Plant.

The Governor of Wyoming, Mark Gordon, issued a statement expressing his support for this move. He noted that in previous years, IRPs had focused on phasing out coal-fired power plants entirely. However, legislative actions in 2019 and 2020 opened up new possibilities for consideration, such as evaluating carbon capture technology on coal plants to meet lower CO2 standards. The Governor acknowledged that IRPs are subject to change but saw this shift towards using carbon capture as a positive step towards producing more reliable, around-the-clock power.

The Governor emphasized that if this technology proves economically viable, it will benefit both Wyoming consumers and those served by PacifiCorp. This change in direction underscores the need for flexibility and adaptability in the energy sector to meet regulatory requirements and consumer preferences.
