After 34 years, the iconic Mirage in Las Vegas is shutting down

Hard Rock Las Vegas, a new resort that will open in 2027, is set to take over the Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The Mirage, which opened in 1989 and played a significant role in shaping the luxury resorts on the Strip, will be closed in July as it undergoes a three-year renovation. The iconic volcano attraction of the Mirage will be demolished to make way for new rooms and amenities.

MGM Resorts acquired the Mirage from Steve Wynn in 2000 and recently sold it to Hard Rock International for over $1 billion. The sale marks the end of an era for the 3,000-room resort, known for its tropical theme.

Upon its closure, more than 3,000 Mirage employees will be laid off with plans to provide over $80 million in severance payments. Guests with reservations beyond July 14 will have their bookings canceled and receive refunds. Any casino chips from the Mirage must be used by that date but can be redeemed at the neighboring Treasure Island casino for an additional 120 days after the Mirage’s closure.

The Hard Rock Las Vegas hotel tower will stand tall at 700 feet, shaped like a guitar. This new resort is set to bring a whole new vibe to the Las Vegas Strip.

Overall, this transition marks a significant change in luxury resorts on the Strip as they continue to evolve and adapt to changing trends and customer preferences.
