Jim Nill of the Stars named NHL General Manager of the Year

Jim Nill, general manager of the Dallas Stars, won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award, as announced by the NHL on Monday night. Nill, who was teammates with Ken Holland in junior hockey almost fifty years ago, has had a successful career both as a player and now as a front-office executive. Together, they have their names on the Stanley Cup four times, thanks to their roles with the Red Wings during Detroit’s championship run from 1997-2008. Now, they find themselves as general managers of opposing teams in the Western Conference finals, both aiming to reach another Stanley Cup.

Nill received 17 out of 42 votes, securing a comfortable lead in the voting for GM of the year. Vancouver’s Patrik Allvin came in second, while Florida’s Bill Zito was third. Nill’s success in building a team that reached the Western Conference final for the second consecutive season was a key factor in his selection. Despite ultimately falling to Edmonton in six games, the Stars’ performance was impressive.

One notable move by Nill was acquiring defenseman Chris Tanev at the trade deadline without sacrificing a first-round pick or the organization’s top prospect. This demonstrated his strategic thinking and ability to make impactful roster decisions. With four Stanley Cup rings from his time with the Detroit Red Wings, Nill is a respected talent evaluator in the NHL.

The GM of the year award is the only one voted on during the playoffs, with the first two rounds taken into consideration. Nill’s recognition is a testament to his role in the success of the Dallas Stars and his contributions to the team’s performance throughout the season.
