John James Wertz: Your One-Stop-Shop for News, Sports, and Career Updates

John James Wertz, a 55-year-old resident of Altoona, passed away suddenly on Thursday. Born and raised in Altoona, he was the son of the late William B. Sr. and Judy Jean Wertz. Surviving family members include a daughter, Amber “Nikki” Williams of Altoona; a son, Justin James Wertz, and wife Hatty, also of Altoona; grandchildren: Haley, Abby, Jarek, James, Savannah, Jaise, Reiley and Jack; and siblings: William B. Wertz Jr. (Brenda), Kevin Wertz Sr. (Carmen), Pamela Wertz (Kristin) and Shaun Wertz (Lisa).

John retired from the State Correctional Institution in Chester as a sergeant in 2015. In his free time, he enjoyed being outdoors and taking part in various activities such as fishing, riding his motorcycle and playing bingo with his daughter. He was also an avid Steelers fan but most importantly treasured spending time with his grandchildren who he adored playing games with them on their adventures around town. One of John’s greatest pleasures was cooking meals for his loved ones during special occasions like Christmas dinner.

John served as a veteran of the U.S Army with extended time spent in Panama before retiring to spend more quality time with his family. He will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he touched with his kindness and generosity.

A Celebration of Life service will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday Dec 16th at Bellwood Fire Hall located at 399 S First St Bellwood PA . Arrangements have been made by Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., located at 719 N Fourth Ave , Altoona PA . Instead of flowers donations can be made to any veteran charity in John’s honor .
