Journalist José Rubén Zamora granted freedom, but will continue serving time for separate case

The presiding judge of the Ninth Sentencing Court, Vernica Ruiz, decreed this Wednesday the release of the president and founder of The Newspaper in Guatemala, José Rubén Zamora, for a money laundering case. However, despite the ruling, the journalist will remain in the Mariscal Zavala military prison for another judicial case where the Prosecutor’s Office accuses him of conspiracy to obstruct justice and use of falsified documents.

In her resolution, the judge granted Zamora house arrest after he paid a bail of 30,000 quetzales (3,750 euros). The judge considered that there was no danger of escape or obstruction to the investigation of the truth. Zamora is prohibited from leaving the country and must periodically sign an attendance book at the Public Ministry. Additionally, he is not allowed to communicate with those involved in the case.

In October of last year, the Second Court of Appeals annulled a previous sentence that sentenced Zamora to six years in prison for money laundering. The Second Chamber ordered a retrial against the journalist for alleged actions related to money laundering to which he had allegedly been involved.

Zamora, the founder of The Newspaper, has faced numerous legal challenges over the years due to his investigative journalism work that revealed corruption and human rights abuses in Guatemala. He has been the target of persecution and threats from high-ranking officials in the government.

Despite his release in one case, Zamora will remain in prison for another case where he is accused of diverting an investigation into money laundering. The journalist has been a vocal advocate for transparency and accountability in Guatemala, and his work has been recognized with awards for his dedication to revealing corruption.
