Stuart Business Owners Feeling Effects of Lake Okeechobee Water Releases

Diver Russell Singson is facing challenges every day as he gears up to clean boats below the surface. The business in Stuart has been suffering due to the discharges from Lake Okeechobee, which have made it nearly impossible for him to complete his work efficiently. Singson, who owns Barracuda Dive Service, shared videos that compare the clear water in January to the murky water caused by the lake discharges that began in mid-February.

On the other side of the St. Lucie River, At The Helm Training is experiencing its own set of challenges. Operations Manager Nancy Husk mentioned that their bookings are down by 50% compared to last year, attributing it to the water quality issues. Clients have expressed worries about the cleanliness of the water, impacting their willingness to participate in boating activities.

Singson and Husk both expressed concerns about sanitation after diving in the darker water. They fear that if the discharges persist, it will deter younger clients who enjoy renting boats and visiting sandbars. Despite these challenges, Singson remains hopeful that the Army Corps of Engineers will adjust their approach to reduce the impact of the discharges.

The discharges from Lake Okeechobee have caused significant problems for boat owners and divers alike in Stuart and nearby areas. As a result, businesses like Barracuda Dive Service are struggling to complete their work efficiently and effectively, while operations like At The Helm Training are seeing a decline in bookings due to concerns about water quality.

Despite these challenges, there are hopes that changes can be made to mitigate the impact of lake discharges on local communities and businesses. As Singson notes, he remains optimistic that if there is a shift in strategy by organizations like The Army Corps of Engineers, things could improve for those affected by these harmful releases.
