Red Sox President Larry Lucchino, Leader of 3 World Series Title Wins, Passes Away at 78

Larry Lucchino, a legendary baseball executive, passed away at the age of 78 on Tuesday. He had spent more than two decades in the sport, including stints as team president for both the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles.

During his tenure with the Red Sox, Lucchino led the team to three World Series titles, breaking the “Curse of the Bambino” that had long held sway over the franchise. He also oversaw efforts to update and modernize Fenway Park, adding seats on top of the iconic “Green Monster” wall and making various renovations to enhance the overall fan experience.

Lucchino was known for his ability to assemble top talent within an organization, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to shape the Red Sox today. He also played a significant role in designing Oriole Park at Camden Yards and developing Petco Park in San Diego.

While in Boston, Lucchino elevated the intense rivalry between the Red Sox and the New York Yankees, referring to them as “the Evil Empire.” His contributions to Major League Baseball will be deeply missed.
