Louisville is reportedly set to hire College of Charleston basketball coach Pat Kelsey as their new head coach, according to multiple sources. Kelsey, who has led the Cougars to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in the past three seasons, is said to be finalizing a deal with the Cardinals that could see him take over as their new coach either on Wednesday or Thursday.

In just two seasons at College of Charleston, Kelsey compiled an impressive 74-27 overall record, including a 39-15 mark in the Coastal Athletic Association. His standout year was the 2022-23 season, where he guided the Cougers to a historic 31-4 record and set a program record for the most wins at the NCAA Division I level. During this run, Kelsey’s team achieved the nation’s longest winning streak at 20 games and spent a month in The Associated Press’ Top 25 poll.

Kelsey recently signed a lucrative five-year contract extension worth $1 million in annual pay running through the 2028 season. The deal includes bonuses he received this year and a $50,000 pay raise had he remained for the following year. The contract also has a $1 million buyout clause in case Kelsey decides to leave Charleston before 2028.

With several key players from his team entering the transfer portal amidst the coaching change, Kelsey’s adaptability to evolving college sports landscape has been critical in his success at College of Charleston. He has embraced elements like transfer portal and name, image, and likeness deals that have set him apart from other coaches.

If Kelsey were to make the transition to Louisville, he would be following in Earl Grant’s footsteps who moved from CofC to Boston College earlier this year. Grant’s success at Boston College after seven seasons at College of Charleston bodes well for Kelsey’s coaching prospects in ACC.
