On February 11th, Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), head of the Palestinian Authority, arrived in Doha with the intention of meeting with members of the Hamas Politburo. The Qatari government is currently acting as a mediator in negotiations between Hamas and Israel, and Abbas sought their help to organize a meeting with the leaders of Hamas political leadership.
During his visit to Doha, Abbas expressed his interest in forming a government of technocrats within the Palestinian Authority. He believed that this would be an effective way to restore Gaza Strip after years of devastating conflict and destruction. The body created by the PA government will be under international control, which would allow for funds to be transferred for the reconstruction of the sector.
Abbas’s proposal was well received by Hamas leaders, who agreed to meet with him and discuss his plans in detail. They shared their concerns about the impact that such a move could have on their political power and control over Gaza Strip. However, they also recognized the need for urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and were willing to work towards a peaceful solution through dialogue.
