Increase in Meningococcal Disease Cases Prompts Health Advisory

A recent increase in cases of meningococcal disease has caused health officials nationwide to issue a health advisory. In Chicago, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) has reported eight cases of invasive meningococcal disease so far this year. This rare but serious bacterial infection is associated with infections of the lining of the brain, spinal cord, and bloodstream. All eight individuals in Chicago had bloodstream infections, and unfortunately, four of them died from the disease.

The CDPH commissioner, Olusimbo Ige, stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and have not yet identified a common exposure among the Chicago cases. Although cases of meningococcal disease remain very rare, health officials want to raise awareness due to the severe outcomes associated with it. The best protection against meningococcal disease is staying up to date with recommended vaccines, much like with other illnesses such as COVID-19 and measles. Last year, seven cases were reported in Chicago, compared to only one to three cases reported between 2017 and 2022.
