The sleeker spacesuits will replace the white, puffy, and bulky moon suits.
NASA on Wednesday unveiled the initial prototype of a new spacesuit that astronauts will put on to discover the Moon beneath the Artemis III mission. Made by Axiom Space, the sleeker spacesuits will replace the white, puffy, and bulky moon suits previously worn by Neil Armstrong and his fellow Apollo astronauts.
In a tweet, NASA Artemis shared the image and wrote, ”@Axiom_Space revealed a spacesuit prototype that our @NASA_Astronauts plan to put on close to the Moon’s South Pole on @NASA ‘s #Artemis III mission. The spacesuit will give lunar explorers added mobility, protection, & the newest technologies.”
The suit prototype known as the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU is a sleek grayish black, with hints of orange and blue, with an Axiom logo front and center. Nevertheless, the actual suit will be white for thermal causes.

The suits will supply higher flexibility and extra protection from the moon’s harsh atmosphere and will come in a wider variety of sizes, according to the Houston-primarily based corporation. As per CBS News, the new helmet gives enhanced visibility, and the boots are specially created for moonwalking, full with thermal insulation appropriate for the moon’s south pole.
These enhanced suits will be worn through the Artemis III mission, the program’s initial moon landing, which is scheduled for 2025.
According to Peggy Whitson, the director of the human spaceflight at Axiom and a former NASA astronaut, the spacesuit is the initial to be especially created to match a lady.
”NASA’s partnership with Axiom is important to landing astronauts on the Moon and continuing American leadership in space. Constructing on NASA’s years of study and knowledge, Axiom’s subsequent-generation spacesuits will not only allow the initial lady to stroll on the Moon, but they will also open possibilities for extra people today to discover and conduct science on the Moon than ever prior to,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated in a statement.
Notably, Artemis III will land astronauts, which includes the initial lady, on the Moon to advance lengthy-term lunar exploration and scientific discovery
