Navigating the Ups and Downs of China’s Smartphone Market: January to February 2021.

In January, China’s smartphone market experienced positive growth, with total shipments surging by 61.4% to 29.5 million units. Local brands saw a 165% increase in sales, while foreign products, such as Apple’s iPhone, made up around 2.4 million units. However, in February the market took a significant turn when smartphone shipments dropped by over 30% compared to the previous year, totaling 14 million units.

According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, local brands dominated the market in February, accounting for approximately 83% of total shipments, while foreign products only made up around 2.4 million units. This represented a decrease of about 31.7% from the previous year when it comes to foreign products such as Apple’s iPhone sales in China.

The decline in demand for smartphones has posed a significant challenge for manufacturers in this industry, especially for foreign brands trying to maintain their market share in one of the most competitive environments globally. To combat this trend and maintain their market share, companies will need to adapt and innovate with new strategies that will appeal to consumers in an ever-changing market dynamic.
