Netanyahu: Israeli delegation trip cancellation to US was a ‘message’ to Hamas

In a surprising turn of events, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that he had cancelled an official delegation to Washington due to the United Nations Security Council’s approval of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. According to Netanyahu, the decision was a direct message to Hamas, urging them not to rely on international pressure to prevent Israel from taking necessary actions.

Netanyahu was critical of the US abstention from the UN vote, which he considered a grave mistake that only encouraged Hamas to adopt a more aggressive stance. The delegation was originally intended to discuss a possible military offensive in Rafah, but Netanyahu opted against it following Biden’s suggestion to consider targeting Hamas without launching a major ground offensive.

The resolution passed by the UN Security Council marked the first time that such text has received support in the conflict after previous US vetoes. Israel has been highly critical of Washington’s decision, with Foreign Minister Israel Katz calling it an unethical and immoral mistake. Despite this setback, talks for a ceasefire in Gaza continue in Doha.

Israel launched its offensive in response to attacks by Hamas, resulting in numerous casualties. The situation remains tense, with Hamas continuing its demands for an end to the offensive and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The conflict has caused significant loss of life and ongoing negotiations for peace are underway.
