A ‘Spintronics’ Paper by David Waldeck and Brian Bloom was Published in Science Advances

In the world of spintronics, recent research by Professor of Chemistry David Waldeck and Dietrich School Research Associate Brian Bloom has opened up exciting new possibilities. Spintronics aims to create devices that utilize the spin of electrons rather than their charge. This field is focused on moving spin information through a material without having to move the associated charge, as it takes more energy to do so and leads to devices getting hotter over time.

Through their research, Waldeck and Bloom were able to successfully move spin current through two cobalt oxide thin films, which have a unique “handedness” that sets them apart from their mirror image. What they discovered was that spin only passes through the material in specific orientations. Their findings were published in the journal Science Advances on May 3, along with colleagues from North Carolina State University.

These results bring to light the potential for creating gateways in materials that allow spin to pass through only in one direction. This property could have important implications for new approaches to data storage, communication, and computing. The research has paved the way for innovative applications in the field of spintronics.
