North Charleston Sports Complex Opens, Promoting Community and Wellness through Sport

The city of North Charleston is proud to announce the grand opening of the new North Charleston Sports Complex on Thursday. The facility, which was built with a $25 million investment from the city, offers community members access to a modern sports facility in their neighborhood.

After demolishing the old Danny Jones Athletic Center over a year ago, the city has created a new complex that features a 25-meter competitive pool, a multi-use gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, and badminton, as well as outdoor tennis courts, a roller rink, and a playing field.

Mayor Reggie Burgess expressed his gratitude to the citizens for their support and tax dollars that helped make the new sports facility possible. He emphasized the city’s commitment to community and wellness, providing residents with comprehensive recreational opportunities to enrich their lives.

The complex aims to ensure that North Charleston is a place where community and health are intertwined, offering a wide range of sporting activities for people of all ages. City officials believe that this new sports complex will elevate North Charleston’s status as a premier destination for sporting events, attracting regional and national tournaments that will boost the local economy through sports tourism.

Visitors were invited to tour the complex on opening day until 7 p.m., with the tennis courts and roller rinks available for use starting the next day. The full facility officially opens to the public on Monday, offering an array of sports and recreational opportunities for the North Charleston community.

Burgess highlighted how important it is in building young athletes’ minds by drawing from his own experience at the former center in 1970 where he was introduced to various sports that shaped his career.

Overall, this new sports complex is an excellent addition to North Charleston’s community offerings and will undoubtedly benefit residents both physically and mentally while bringing economic growth through sports tourism.
