A burglary took place at a currency exchange in the West Town neighborhood on Friday morning, with two thieves stealing an ATM machine. The incident happened around 2:30 a.m., and Chicago police were alerted by a witness who reported seeing the unknown offenders breaking into the business, removing the ATM, and fleeing the scene. The owner of the business mentioned that this has happened multiple times before, and it is unclear if these burglaries are connected.
In January, another currency exchange was targeted for its ATM when thieves drove a Jeep Cherokee through the front window near Roosevelt and Jefferson Street. This is just one example of a growing trend of ATM thefts in the area. No one is currently in custody for this crime, and Area 3 detectives are still investigating the incident to identify the suspects responsible.
According to witnesses, during this latest incident, thieves broke into the business by removing glass from the front door. They then took out the ATM machine, loaded it onto a white van, and left. The amount stolen from this particular exchange is unknown at this time. However, reports suggest that these types of crimes have been increasing in frequency recently, with multiple currency exchanges being targeted for their valuable machines containing cash or other valuable items.
