Governor Gordon’s Response to PacifiCorp’s Carbon Capture Technology Installation Plan at Jim Bridger Power Plant

PacifiCorp has submitted an updated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for 2023, detailing its strategy for sourcing energy over the next two decades. The Wyoming Public Service Commission will review the IRP, which includes plans to install carbon capture technology on coal-fired units 3 and 4 at the Jim Bridger Power Plant in Sweetwater County.

Governor Mark Gordon has commented on the new direction outlined in the IRP, noting that it represents a significant shift from previous plans that aimed to phase out coal-fired power plants entirely. However, recent legislation requires utilities to make a good faith effort to sell coal units before closing them, and regulated utilities must now also evaluate the use of carbon capture technology to meet lower CO2 standards mandated by federal regulations and consumer preferences.

Despite being subject to change, the selection of carbon capture as the preferred portfolio for Jim Bridger Power Plant Units 3 & 4 is seen as an important step toward producing more reliable and economically viable energy sources. This move is viewed as a win for Wyoming, consumers, and PacifiCorp’s customers who are looking for more sustainable energy options.
