Science center says upside-down sea turtle found by Florida beachgoers survives

A green sea turtle was found upside down and stranded on Daytona Beach, prompting witnesses to turn it right-side up before taking it for medical treatment at the Ponce Inlet Marine Science Center. The turtle was described as lethargic and emaciated, indicating that it had likely been sick for some time. The science center is providing the turtle with fluids and antibiotics, giving it a guarded prognosis.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has emphasized the importance of not disturbing sea turtles on Florida beaches during the busy summer months. Any disruptions or distractions can have a negative impact on the turtles, such as causing them to return to the ocean prematurely or be led away from the water. FWC advises against using flashlights, flash photography, or video equipment around sea turtles as this can interfere with their natural behavior.

If someone comes across a stranded or dead sea turtle, witnesses someone disturbing a sea turtle or its nest, or sees a hatchling heading away from the water, FWC recommends calling their Division of Law Enforcement. The hotline number is 1-888-404-FWCC (3922) or *FWC (*392). More information on how to help protect sea turtles can be found on the FWC’s website. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting sea turtles while enjoying Florida’s beaches during the summer season.
