WhatsApp introduces new feature allowing users to customize photo backgrounds and styles using generative AI

In recent months, both WhatsApp and Meta have been developing new features based on generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for photo editing. WhatsApp’s latest standout feature is the ability to modify your background and replace it with another, as well as transform your style based on user descriptions. Meanwhile, Meta has developed new tools such as the Meta AI chatbot and Expressive Media Universe (EMU), which creates images from text and allows users to create stickers for messaging applications.

As a result of these developments, WhatsApp plans to incorporate two additional tools based on generative AI for image editing using EMU technology on Instagram. These features include Restyle, which applies visual styles based on a description, and Backdrop, which allows users to modify the background based on their instructions. The latest version of WhatsApp for Android has already been released through the Google Play beta program and includes a new button in the photo sending interface that offers options such as cropping, rotating the photo, adding stickers and text, using the drawing tool, and more. Additionally, new features for background modification, style changes, and resizing images have been incorporated into this version of WhatsApp.

It remains unclear if these features will also be available for iOS devices in the future. However, with continued advancements in AI-based photo editing tools like those developed by WhatsApp and Meta, users can expect even more control over their photos in the future.
