RINA Grants Approval in Principle to Kindon New Energy Technology Co. for New Energy Technology

RINA, a multinational company that specializes in inspection, certification, ship classification, and engineering consultancy, has granted Kindon New Energy Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. the Approval in Principle (AiP) for its groundbreaking green methanol offshore production platform solution. This platform produces methanol entirely offshore using renewable CO2 and green hydrogen generated from wind power electrolysis technology.

RINA’s Greater China Marine Operations Director, Luigi Mattera, emphasized the importance of supporting decarbonization technologies and highlighted the significance of using Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology to produce green methanol offshore. This AiP confirms that the methanol produced adheres to the highest standards of sustainability, utilizing renewable resources and innovative processes.

Kindon New Energy CEO Wenbo Wang explained that the production process involves using green hydrogen, renewable CO2 captured through DAC, and sustainable electricity to synthesize methanol. This concept offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, contributing to the global effort to reduce carbon emissions. The offshore production platform developed by Kindon New Energy is designed to produce 0.1 million metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green methanol. The methanol synthesis processes take place entirely on the platform, with the electricity needs being met by green power generated from offshore wind farms. The platform is also engineered to accommodate future access to additional sources of green or biomass-derived CO2.

RINA expressed their satisfaction in awarding Kindon New Energy the AiP for their innovative production platform, underscoring the platform’s role in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in the marine and offshore industries.
