Putin shifts blame to “radical Islamists” while also targeting Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the attack at a concert hall near Moscow was carried out by “radical Islamists.” During a televised meeting, Putin stated that the crime was committed by radical Islamists and suggested that the shooting was part of a broader intimidation campaign in Ukraine, where there has been ongoing conflict since 2014.

Investigators are now focusing on several suspects in custody as part of their probe into the attack, which left at least 137 people dead. The Kremlin imposed pre-trial detention on three individuals involved in the attack, bringing the total number of terror suspects in custody to seven, including the four suspected shooters. The suspects appeared before a judge, with three of them reportedly pleading guilty.

While Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, Putin and other Russian officials have hinted without evidence that Ukraine may have been involved. However, the White House has dismissed these claims as Kremlin propaganda, stating that the attack was carried out by ISIS fighters. There have been reports of torture and injuries sustained by the suspects while in custody, prompting condemnation from human rights activists.

Russian human rights activists argue that torture not only undermines the credibility of evidence obtained but also perpetuates the cycle of violence in society. The public display of brutality in this case is seen as a tactic to distract from failures within the Russian security services before the attack. Three days after the incident, 97 injured individuals were still receiving treatment in hospitals, with the death toll at 137 and over 180 injured.

The attack has caused widespread shock and grief among Russians, with grieving individuals laying flowers at a makeshift memorial at the site of tragedy. As investigations continue and questions surround motives and perpetrators of this heinous crime.
