Since 2010, Operation Medicine Drop has successfully incinerated over 266 million pills collected through both permanent drop boxes and more than 4,000 events held across North Carolina. This collaborative effort involving Safe Kids North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the State Bureau of Investigation is a testament to the shared commitment of these agencies to promote safe medication disposal practices and protect the well-being of the community and the environment.

Lillie Malpass, the executive director at PCCSU, emphasized the importance of these medication disposal events in keeping the community safe. By providing resources such as lockboxes for medications, these events help prevent medications from ending up in the wrong hands, particularly those of youth and children. Community organizations have partnered with Operation Medicine Drop to ensure the availability of such resources for the public.

Local sheriff’s offices, police departments, and some fire departments maintain permanent medication drop boxes for those who may have missed the event. This ongoing effort to provide safe and secure disposal options highlights the commitment of various agencies to keeping communities safe from the potential dangers of improper medication disposal.
