The Impact of Mental Health on Pregnancy and Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Women

Sudden cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that affects approximately 350,000 people each year outside of hospitals. With almost 90 percent of cases resulting in fatality, it is an issue that must be taken seriously. Despite the stigma surrounding mental health, more and more people are seeking treatment for such conditions.

Advanced practice nurse Nancy Dagefoerde at OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute explains that sudden cardiac arrest can occur in any adult, particularly those aged 30 and older. Factors such as risk factors, family history, and heart defects can contribute to the likelihood of experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. This condition results from an irregular heartbeat known as an arrhythmia, which causes the heart to stop beating or lose electrical activity, leading to a lack of breathing and pulse in the affected individual.

Sarah Shoemaker, a certified nurse midwife at OSF HealthCare, advises women who are considering pregnancy to discuss any concerns they may have with their healthcare provider early on. For women who have found the right combination of medications, disrupting this regimen should be avoided whenever possible. If a medication change is necessary, providers may recommend a supplement to address the situation while considering the individual needs and circumstances of each patient. The decision-making process involves weighing the pros and cons to determine the best course of action for the patient’s well-being.
