Russia declares day of national mourning following Moscow attack

On Sunday, Russia is observing a day of national mourning after a horrific massacre in a concert hall in Moscow claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS). The attackers stormed Crocus City Hall on Friday evening and opened fire with automatic weapons on the crowd before setting fire to the building with a flammable liquid.

In response to the attack, posters featuring a candle on a black background with the inscription “We are in mourning 03/22/2024” have been displayed on billboards and bus stops throughout Moscow. President Vladimir Putin condemned the “barbaric terrorist” act in a televised address on Saturday and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. He announced that four suspects had been arrested as they tried to flee towards Ukraine.

The Kremlin has reported that a total of 11 individuals have been arrested, including four terrorists involved in the attack. These suspects, described as “foreign citizens”, were captured near the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders in the Bryansk region. Search and rescue efforts continue at the concert hall as authorities use heavy equipment to dismantle damaged structures and remove debris.

A video purportedly filmed by the attackers at the concert hall was shared on social media accounts linked to ISIS. The video shows armed individuals firing weapons and starting a fire in the lobby of Crocus City Hall. The suspects were said to have planned to escape to Ukraine, causing tensions between Russia and Ukraine amid this tragedy.

The international community has expressed concern over potential escalation of violence in the region following this tragic event. Investigations into the motives and connections of those responsible for the attack are ongoing as Russia mourns its losses from this senseless act of violence.
