Midtown businesses send a message to burglars following third break-in

Midtown’s Cooper Young area business owners are on high alert after a recent series of burglaries in the area. The latest victim is Ounce of Hope, with thieves stealing nearly $6,000 worth of merchandise during the break-in. This incident marks the third time in the past year that the store has been targeted, causing frustration among staff.

Assistant manager Charlotte Campbell expressed her disappointment over the situation, stating that the store has faced challenges such as being dropped by an insurance company and increased rates as a result of these repeated burglaries. Despite these setbacks, the store does not pass on these costs to customers, further straining their financial situation.

According to data from the Memphis Data Hub, there have been 42 reports of burglaries and robberies of businesses within a half-mile radius of Ounce of Hope in the last year. The most recent incident involved two men breaking into Aldo’s Pizza, stealing over $1,000 worth of food and alcohol. Surveillance cameras at Ounce of Hope captured a clear photo of one of the thieves, though it is unclear if they are connected to the Aldo’s Pizza burglary.

Campbell emphasized the impact of these crimes on the community, urging those responsible to consider the consequences of their actions. She highlighted the role of local businesses as essential components of the community, providing support and sustenance to residents. Ounce of Hope is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the identification
