A lion at Greenville Zoo succumbs to health problems

One of the African Lions at Greenville Zoo, Saied, was humanely euthanized this morning at the age of 15. He had been receiving treatment for degenerative joint disease and a spinal neurological issue but recent testing revealed that his conditions had worsened significantly, affecting his quality of life. After a discussion among zoo staff about his health status, the difficult decision was made to euthanize him.

Saied and his brother Chuma had joined the Greenville Zoo from the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia back in 2010. Saied was known as the dominant male of the pair, and the staff will now be monitoring Chuma as he adjusts to the loss of his brother. Plans are being made for a remembrance for Saied, and the zoo will provide updates as they develop.

The Greenville Zoo expressed their sadness over the loss of Saied, a beloved member of their zoo community. They appreciate the support and understanding from visitors and animal lovers during this difficult time. Stay tuned for more information as the zoo continues to honor Saied’s memory.
