Community health leader in Multnomah County resigns after less than a year

Multnomah County’s community health center has experienced a series of resignations, including the departure of its executive director, Darnell “DJ” Rhodes. Rhodes was brought on board last April to lead the system, earning $273,000 per year. However, he resigned on Friday after less than a year in the job.

Rhodes faced challenges early on and was placed on paid administrative leave in October. He later told Willamette Week that he faced discrimination as a Black leader. Despite these issues, Rhodes returned from leave in January but resigned in February. His departure was part of a series of exits from the health center system, which also included the resignation of Jeff Perry, the chief financial officer and Bernadette Thomas, the medical director.

County officials stated that Rhodes’ resignation was unrelated to the decisions made by Perry and Thomas. Serena Cruz, the county’s chief operating officer said that they were committed to filling the vacancies left by these departures and maintaining their commitment to providing accessible and equitable health care services to all residents. The community health center will continue to work towards overcoming challenges and ensuring quality care for all members of the community.
